The Tilda Tiffin competition to find the best South Asian restaurant in Britain began two years ago. Local MPs are asked to vote for their favourite South Asian restaurant from within their constituency. These restaurants are then entered into a national competition and ten finalists are chosen to attend the national ‘cook-off’ at the House of Commons.

This year the competition will raise funds for: Friends in Village Development Bangladesh, whose aim it is to contribute towards educational and socio-economic empowerment of disadvantaged people in rural Bangladesh, and also the breast cancer charity ROKO Cancer.

With over 17 years of experience in the Indian restaurant trade, says Tareq, the elder of the three: “Having lived in St Albans for over 25 years, we always wanted to open a restaurant in our home town, but for one reason or another, it never materialised, until early this year when an old, tired looking and rundown Indian restaurant came onto the market.” Chilli Raj is located on the corner of Stanhope Road and Hatfield Road, opposite The Crown Pub.

The brothers bought the restaurant and set about turning it into a modern, vibrant and exciting restaurant. Kashim, the second youngest of the brothers, said: “We have set out to create a relaxed venue and brought in supremely gifted Chefs and have created a restaurant that serves traditional Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine with contemporary influences. We aim to ensure our customers are served the very best in authentic Indian and Bangladeshi food, using only the very finest ingredients”.

The menu at Chilli Raj is diverse and never fails to surprise and delight its discerning clientele.
