ST ALBANS restaurant Chilli Raj has been voted the public’s favourite restaurant at the Oaklands College’s World of Food
Tuesday, 20 July, 2010
Visitors to the festival, held on the lawns of the college’s Smallford campus, had over 20 restaurants to choose from, with cuisine varying from Caribbean to Indian, but in the end, the family-run restaurant in Stanhope Road won them over.
Kashim Abdul, who co-owns the restaurant with his brother and was brought up in St Albans, said: “This is such an honour for us and fantastic news considering the number of restaurants that took part in the festival. It also gives the staff a great boost for all their hard work and effort to be recognised.”
Mark Dawe, Oaklands College Chief Executive and Principal, added: “The World of Food Festival was a great success and I am delighted to be able to give this award to Chilli Raj.”

MP’s Curry choice is a winner
An authentic taste of curry and prestigious silver medals cemented St Albans’ reputation as a grate destination for food lovers.
The Chilli Raj restaurant on Stanhope Road, St Albans was one of 10 regional finalists invited to take part in a “cook-off” competition at the palace of Westminster.
The competition was judged by 10 experts including celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott and the editor of Tandoori Magazine Humayun Hussain.
Ainsley Harriott was said to be particularly impressed by the restaurant’s salmon-based fusion dish and the chefs’ light touch.
The Abdul brothers and their team at Chilli Raj were awarded the silver medal in the Tilda Tiffin Cup, a competition to find the best South Asian restaurant in Britain for which MPs make nominations from their constituency.
St Albans MP Anne Main was quick to congratulate the restaurant saying: ‘The standard of cuisine on offer was absolutely top class so it is a real testament to everyone at the Chilli Raj that they did so well.
The award recognises them as one of the top curry restaurant in the country.
